While working at a refugee outreach center, I met a woman who described her experience in a refugee camp while waiting to be granted access to come to the United States. For her and her family, the daily view of the flag above the embassy represented hope, a point of access, and a future home. However, over the next 15 years, they would be denied entry multiple times. As they waited for a door to open, the symbol above them began to weigh heavily. Imbedded within Heavy Hope is their story and the universal longing for home and belonging.
